Inulin in Sodatide: Why 211 Milligrams Is Not 12 Grams

Quick answer

One Sodatide capsule lists 211 mg of chicory root inulin. EFSA accepted a regularity effect only at 12 grams a day, about 57 capsules, and weight trials used a median 10 grams a day. So 211 mg is about 2% of the studied amount. Inulin is a real, well-studied fiber, but at this dose the effect cannot be predicted.

Fresh chicory roots, pale and tapered, the plant source of inulin
Chicory root is the source of the inulin in Sodatide. Studies of it used grams a day; one capsule lists 211 mg.

On the label

How much inulin is in one Sodatide capsule?

One Sodatide capsule lists 211 mg of inulin. The label line reads "Chicory Root Inulin (Cichorium intybus)(root)", and the amount is printed, not hidden in a blend.

The serving is 1 capsule, and a bottle holds 30. So a full bottle supplies about 6.3 grams of inulin across a whole month.

The second fiber, potato resistant starch, adds 100 mg, so the two fibers total about 0.3 grams a day.

A printed amount is a fair point in the label's favor: it allows a comparison with research. See the full Sodatide Supplement Facts.

The units

What is the difference between grams and milligrams of inulin?

A gram is 1,000 milligrams. That single fact explains most of the gap between Sodatide's label and the inulin research.

Fiber studies report grams per day. Supplement labels often print milligrams, so 211 can look large next to a 12 until the units line up.

Sodatide's inulin compared with research amounts, all in milligrams. Sources: EFSA (EFSA 2015 chicory inulin claim), Reimer 2025 meta-analysis via trade press (Reimer 2025 chicory ITF weight meta-analysis (trade report)), Bonnema 2010 (Bonnema 2010 inulin GI tolerance).

Nobody should take 57 capsules; the label says one a day. The point is scale: research and the capsule sit about fiftyfold apart.

The 12 g rule

What did EFSA accept for chicory inulin, and at what dose?

EFSA accepted that native chicory inulin helps keep bowel movements regular, but only at 12 grams a day (EFSA 2015 chicory inulin claim). That is the European Food Safety Authority, which reviews health claims before food makers may use them in the EU.

The panel based its view on 6 studies with 86 people. They consistently showed that at least 12 grams a day raised stool frequency. The panel added a condition: the effect counts only if it does not cause diarrhea.

Each "Label" bar is drawn to scale against the research dose or daily guideline beside it. Both fibers have printed amounts per 1-capsule serving. The probiotic blend is left out because it is dosed in live cells (CFU), which the label does not print. Studies tested each ingredient alone, not Sodatide.

On the bars, 211 mg fills about 2% of the EFSA amount; resistant starch looks similar (Snelson 2019 RS2 meta-analysis). That does not prove the capsule does nothing. It means the research cannot say what it does.

Weight research

What did the 2025 inulin weight meta-analysis find?

A 2025 meta-analysis of 32 trials found that chicory inulin-type fibers lowered body weight by just under 1 kg on average, compared with placebo (Reimer 2025 chicory ITF weight meta-analysis (trade report)). The median dose in those trials was 10 grams a day.

The trials mostly enrolled adults with overweight or obesity. Waist size fell by about 1 cm. Body fat percentage dropped only in trials longer than 8 weeks.

  • The effect was small, and results varied a lot between trials.
  • The work was funded by an inulin ingredient supplier, and one co-author worked for it.
  • Every trial used grams, about 47 times the amount in one Sodatide capsule.

The FTC says a product's claims need research that matches the product's own dose and formula (FTC Health Products Compliance Guidance). A 10 gram trial does not support a 211 mg capsule. For a wider look at the science, see the chicory root inulin ingredient page.

Tolerance

How much inulin can most people tolerate?

Healthy adults tolerated up to 10 grams a day of native inulin in a small trial (Bonnema 2010 inulin GI tolerance). Gas was the most common complaint, followed by bloating.

That 2010 trial gave 26 healthy adults single doses of 5 or 10 grams. Both tended to raise mild gut symptoms.

At 211 mg, Sodatide's inulin is far below the amounts that caused gas in that trial. Gut effects from one capsule are more likely to come from the probiotic blend, or from nothing at all. Mayo Clinic and MedlinePlus both say to raise fiber slowly over a few weeks and drink plenty of fluid (Mayo Clinic fiber) (MedlinePlus dietary fiber).

Inulin and IBS

Inulin is a type of fructan, and Monash University lists fructans among the FODMAPs that can trigger IBS symptoms (Monash FODMAP high/low foods). The dose in one capsule is tiny, but people on a low-FODMAP plan may want to ask their dietitian first.

Food sources

Which foods supply inulin and other fructans?

Several common foods supply fructans, the fiber family inulin belongs to. Monash University lists garlic, onion, leek, wheat and rye breads, cashews and pistachios among fructan-rich foods (Monash FODMAP high/low foods).

Vegetables

Onion, garlic and leek

Everyday cooking bases that carry fructans. Chicory root itself is used mostly as an added ingredient, not a vegetable you buy.

Grains

Wheat and rye breads

Whole-grain breads add fructans plus other fibers. The 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines favor fiber-rich whole grains (Dietary Guidelines 2025-2030).

Packaged foods

Bars and yogurts

Many products add chicory root fiber. Mayo Clinic lists chicory root among the added fibers you may see on food labels (Mayo Clinic fiber).

Adults need about 21 to 38 grams of total fiber a day (MedlinePlus dietary fiber). Beans, oats, vegetables, fruit and whole grains do that work. Mayo Clinic puts it plainly: whole foods are generally better than fiber supplements (Mayo Clinic fiber). More on that in fiber foods versus fiber capsules.

Bottom line

What does 211 mg of inulin mean for Sodatide buyers?

It means the inulin in Sodatide is a real, well-studied fiber at a dose far below any studied amount. About 2% of EFSA's 12 grams cannot be expected to repeat the trial results.

The capsule adds about 0.3 grams of fiber to your day. If more fiber is your goal, food carries almost all of it.

  • Read the label amount in milligrams, then divide by 1,000 to compare with studies.
  • Ask what dose a claim was tested at, and whether it was the same product.
  • Build fiber slowly from food, and drink water with it.
  • Talk to a doctor about any unplanned weight loss, ongoing belly pain, blood in the stool or a big change in bowel habits.

Sodatide's label claims metabolic and digestive support. Treat those as the brand's claims, not as findings from a trial of Sodatide, because none has been published.

FAQ

Inulin dose questions

How much inulin should you take a day?

EFSA accepted a regularity effect at 12 grams of chicory inulin a day (EFSA 2015 chicory inulin claim), and weight trials used a median of 10 grams (Reimer 2025 chicory ITF weight meta-analysis (trade report)). Healthy adults tolerated up to 10 grams in a small trial (Bonnema 2010 inulin GI tolerance). Sodatide gives 211 mg, so follow its one-capsule label and get more fiber from food.

Can 211 mg of inulin in Sodatide do anything on its own?

No study has tested 211 mg, so nobody can say. It is about 2% of the 12 grams EFSA accepted for regularity (EFSA 2015 chicory inulin claim). Any effect from one Sodatide capsule is unknown, and no trial of the product itself has been published.

Does inulin help with weight loss?

Trials found a small average change: just under 1 kg compared with placebo, at a median 10 grams a day (Reimer 2025 chicory ITF weight meta-analysis (trade report)). The analysis was funded by an ingredient supplier. Sodatide's 211 mg is about one forty-seventh of that dose, and it is not a weight-loss treatment.

Does inulin cause gas and bloating?

At gram doses, yes, it can. In a 2010 trial, gas was the most reported symptom at 5 and 10 grams, then bloating (Bonnema 2010 inulin GI tolerance). At 211 mg per Sodatide capsule the amount is far smaller, so inulin is an unlikely cause of gas.

Is inulin a FODMAP?

Inulin is a type of fructan, and Monash University lists fructans as a FODMAP group linked to IBS symptoms (Monash FODMAP high/low foods). One Sodatide capsule holds a tiny amount, but people following a low-FODMAP plan should check with their dietitian.
